Most of our core trails at the likes of Beaver Lodge Forest Lands and Elk Falls Provincial Park are kid-friendly and offer the chance to learn about the salmon run and the Quinsam River Hatchery and hunt for wildflowers, fungi, and small wildlife. At low tide, head to the ocean to explore the tide pools at beachfront parks with easy parking, like Ken Forde Park. Colourful starfish sightings are common alongside many types of seaweed, glistening shells, and small crabs. Further south, Stories Beach is the closest sand beach to town, and as you hop from beach to beach you’ll want to play detective: looking out for our series of animal driftwood sculptures.

Splash into Summer with the Whole Family

Several parks around town also boast apparatus to inspire hours of play. On hot days from May until the September Labour Day weekend, head to Willow Point Park to cool off in the fire hydrants, hosepipes, and orca-shaped mega soaker at the Splash Park. Access is free and hours are usually 10 am to 8 pm, with family-sized change rooms and washrooms onsite. Willow Point Park also has a skateboard park, playground, and picnic area; the perfect spot to spend the whole day. Families with floaties and inflatables are often found just outside of town at McIvor Lake Park with its gradual, sandy drop-off. It’s important to note that there are no lifeguards on duty here. Pack a picnic from Dave’s Bakery and make a day of it—there are washrooms in the parking lots, and SUPs, kayaks, and other water vessels are welcome outside of the cordoned-off swimming area.

Playgrounds in Nature

If you’re seeking a shadier spot, head to the natural play space in Centennial Park near the Campbell River Museum. Here’s your opportunity to encourage the little adventurers in your family to climb over and engage with the wood and nets however their imagination sees fit. You’ll also find our seasonal outdoor swimming pool at Centennial Park. Other playgrounds that celebrate our wide open sky, mountain and ocean views, can be found at Robert Ostler Park (a perfect place to keep kids entertained when waiting for the ferry to Quadra Island) and Robron Park at the Campbell River Sportsplex.
