Visitors to Campbell River frequently comment on the friendliness of our locals. Locals who are eager to share their gratitude for the incredible landscapes they get to call home and are curious about what’s on your itinerary.

If you’re the type of traveller who loves to immerse yourself in a destination’s local community, whether you’re visiting solo and looking for adventure friends or simply know that’s the best way to get to know a location (and discover hidden gems), these are the best places to get a local’s perspective of Campbell River.

Beach Fires and Oceanfront Hangouts
Just like travellers, Campbell River residents are usually found enjoying the access to the outdoors we have here. Our beaches and waterfront parks are a favourite spot for families. Welcoming locals may help you light your first beach fire and provide tips on beach fire etiquette. Head to Ken Forde Park to find larger groups gathered with s’mores and picnics, or try Dick Murphy Park and Stories Beach.
Also on the waterfront, Foggdukkers Coffee and Roasting is somewhat of a Campbell River institution. Its large outdoor seating area is a great spot to take in the view, hear local insights, all while keeping one eye out at all times for whale spouts and soaring eagles.

Eateries, Markets, and Live Music
Food and drink have always been something to gather around and some of our cafes and eateries are fantastic community hubs. Try downtown places like Session Taproom + Kitchen, Beach Fire Brewing, Stonehouse Teas, and Freyja – the croissant story, particularly when events are on like comedy nights, open mics, or the annual A Night Out Downtown event.
Live performances from locals and touring musicians, whether in an eatery, performing arts venues like the Tidemark Theatre and Rivercity Players, or outside in the summer, are also hotspots to bump into new people. The Campbell River Farmers Market from May to September is the perfect blend of tapping into a thriving community atmosphere, listening to live music, and meeting local makers and growers.
Family-friendly Parks
For travellers with children, our vibrant green parks are a fun place to spend a sunny afternoon from spring to fall. In the heat of summer, the Splash Park and playground at Willow Point Park beckon, as does the pool at Centennial Park and its shady natural play area and pickleball courts. There is also a playground at Robert V. Ostler Park in the heart of downtown, and the park also hosts numerous community festivities throughout the year, from Loop Day and Canada Day to the Vancouver Island Food Truck Festival.
