There’s so much to see and do in Campbell River. Indoors or outdoors, these are some of our favourite activities here in town.

Skydiving on Vancouver Island Year-round

Thanks to its temperate rainforest and milder winter temperatures, Campbell River itself doesn’t see as much snow. This means our extensive trail systems are usually clear almost 365 days of the year for hiking, biking, trail running, and dog walks.

Campbell River Airport is the only spot on the island where you can sky-dive year-round—join the fantastic team at Campbell River Skydive Centre for a different perspective of our region, whether it’s covered in sunshine or snow.

Year-round Marine Activities in Campbell River

Campbell River is known as the Salmon Capital of the World, and while there are seasonal windows for some types of salmon like Pink and Sockeye, you can fish for Chinook Salmon year-round. Charter one of our knowledgeable fishing guides and head out on the ocean—prawns and Dungeness crab are also available year-round.

Sailing out of Campbell River is another favourite year-round activity. Many folks like to head out in the summer months to explore the surprisingly warm waters of Desolation Sound, but shoulder season and even winter can be preferable due to there being more wind (and quieter anchorages). Two local operators offer intimate sailing experiences where you’ll learn directly from the sailboat’s passionate owners. Beyond Sailing offers sailing lessons and certifications, as well as private charters from Steph, Max, soon-to-arrive baby Noam, and salty seadog, Mao. Cedar Seas is owned by private chef, Meesh Coles, and sailor and photographer, John Kelsey. They’ll be offering photography and other workshops along with private charters, rooted in Kelsey’s conservation work and their shared passion for wildlife and the environment.

If the cold water enthusiasm has taken hold, Campbell River has numerous cold dip-worthy (or swimming if you’re tenured) spots like Ken Forde Park and Dick Murphy Park, as well as various lakes and rivers. It’s key to consider safety—build up your tolerance, have warm gear and a hot drink for afterwards, go with a buddy (or group) the first few times or if you’re in a new spot, and be aware of the powerful tides and currents that grace our oceanfront. You can even order a mobile sauna from Island Sauna in Black Creek to round out your hot-cold therapy circuit.
