Those in the know flock to Campbell River for a summer packed full of wildlife tours, hiking and camping adventures, water activities, and arts and culture in the outdoors. To share all the exciting things on offer this summer, the Campbell River Association of Tour Operators, independent businesses, and organizations are coming together for the Campbell River Tourism Season Opening on June 1.

With lots of discounts up for grabs, it’s the perfect reminder for locals to celebrate the opportunity of being a tourist in their own town (and a chance for well-timed visitors to enjoy a taste of what makes Campbell River the place to be during the warm weather). What’s more, the event coincides with the start of World Ocean Week—the perfect tie-in to Campbell River’s incredible ocean-centric tourism, resulting in the Tourism Season Opening’s ‘whale’ theme.

Everyone from wildlife watching tour operators and cultural institutions to local rental companies and eateries are getting involved with the Campbell River Tourism Season Opening. Cafes and restaurants will feature whale-themed beverages and appetizers. Robert Ostler Park and Ken Forde Park, along with various buildings, the Campbell River Estuary, and even the Campbell River Airport will be the host locations for discounted tours and free entertainment.

A BBQ, ice cream truck, yard games and jumping castle will also be on-site for the whole family to enjoy alongside the unveiling of the brand new Whale Trail.

Downtown at Robert Ostler Park, the Downtown Campbell River Business Improvement Association is putting on a family-friendly Kite Day featuring kite flying, build-your-own kites, face-painting and other activities from 12-4pm. Food trucks will also be ready to keep you fuelled and we’re giving the iconic Beaver Tail treat a makeover with Whale Tail donuts and pastries. Shopper’s Row will feature market stalls, live art stations, and all-day specials in stores, while the Campbell River Art Gallery will be offering make your own t-shirt sessions in Spirit Square.

The Naturally Pacific Resort will be hosting a closest to the pin challenge at their Velocity Lounge and Driving Range. Put your short game to the test for your chance to win some prizes!

Enjoy Free Exhibition Entry

Head a little further south to Campbell River’s iconic Discovery Pier and you’ll find 20th Anniversary Festivities taking place at the Maritime Heritage Centre from 11am to 3pm. Expect free admission, a by donation barbecue, plenty of family-friendly activities, and the chance to share your story of two iconic marine vessels: the HC and the BCP45 with a videographer. The Visitor Centre will also be open to share additional “Things to Do” and extra deals on tours.

Across the parking lot, the Discovery Passage Aquarium will have discounted tours and special activities at their explorer lab. Don’t forget to swing by for ice cream on the Discovery Pier afterwards to discover their special Ocean Day ice cream treat. Immerse in Campbell River’s history at the Museum with free admission and an extra special scavenger hunt inside. You can also take your learning outside on their self-guided Trivia Trek across town.

To make the most of the Campbell River Tourism Season Opening, pick up a Passport from participating operators on the day to be guided to each location and have the chance to win additional tours to enjoy this summer. We can’t wait to join you in celebrating all our inspiring city has to offer.
