SUMMARY:The Dawn Chorus - Secrets of Spring Birdsong
DESCRIPTION:The Dawn Chorus—the surge of birdsong that greets early spring mornings—is one of nature’s most remarkable performances. In this engaging talk\, biologist Sandra Milligan invites you to explore the rich soundscape of Campbell River’s breeding birds without having to rise before dawn. Discover who is singing\, why birds vocalize\, and more about their breeding behaviour. From dramatic examples of sexual selection such as extravagant feathers and vocal mimicry to the often-overlooked beauty of familiar birds like starlings and robins\, this presentation reveals the surprising complexity behind the songs we hear every spring and their role in breeding. \nAbout the Presenter:\nSandra Milligan is a full-time Biology Instructor at North Island College and a passionate educator with a deep connection to the natural world. For the past 17 years\, she has led intertidal walks at Willow Point Reef\, inspiring students of all ages to explore and better understand coastal ecosystems. \nSince moving to Campbell River nearly 20 years ago\, Sandra has been actively involved in local environmental initiatives. She helped establish the Discovery Passage Aquarium\, served as President of the Greenways Land Trust\, and was part of the Beaver Lodge Trust Society\, and continues to advocate for urban trees and cycling infrastructure. \nA dedicated naturalist and bird watcher—or as she prefers\, a bird listener—Sandra is especially fascinated by bird communication. She is fascinated with how birds use complex vocalizations to share information\, revealing a depth of intelligence and social awareness that science is only beginning to fully understand. \nSandra is passionate about sharing her knowledge and her love of Campbell River’s natural environment with both residents and visitors. \nDate: Tuesday\, June 9 from 6:00 – 7:30pm\nLocation: Museum at Campbell River\nCost: $10 per person; $8 for seniors and museum members.

SUMMARY:Harry Manx Live on Quadra Island
DESCRIPTION:We’re thrilled to welcome back Harry Manx to the Heriot Bay Inn for two unforgettable evenings of music on Friday\, June 12 and Saturday\, June 13\, 2026. \nKnown for his soulful performances and unmistakable “Mysticssippi” sound\, Harry blends traditional blues with the rich\, meditative influence of Indian classical music—creating concerts that are deeply moving. Whether he’s playing slide guitar\, banjo\, harmonica\, or the 20-string Mohan veena\, Harry has a way of drawing audiences in with warmth\, humour\, and incredible musicianship. \nHarry Manx has spent years fusing eastern musical traditions with the blues\, switching effortlessly between conventional guitars\, harmonica\, and banjo and the decidedly different Mohan veena\, a 20-stringed instrument invented by Manx’ Indian mentor Vishwa Mohan Bhatt. Manx is often referred to as the “Mysticssippi” Blues Man\, because of his expertise in melding both East and West music together and therefore\, “creating musical short stories that wed the Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas”. \nOver the last 10 years\, Harry Manx released 11 Albums and has garnered a room full of awards including\, “seven Maple Blues Awards\, six Juno nominations\, the Canadian Folk Award in 2005 for Best Solo Artist and won CBC Radio’s “Great Canadian Blues Award” in 2007″. His most recent accomplishment was receiving yet another Juno Nomination for “Blues Album of the Year”\, for his release\, “Bread and Buddha” in 2010. \nHarry’s past performances at the Inn have been truly special evenings\, and we’re excited to have him return to our little corner of the coast. \nTickets: $49 (show only)\nShow-only seating: 7:00 pm\nShowtime: 7:30–9:30 pm\nDinner reservations begin at 5:00 pm\nCall 250-285-3322 to reserve your seats

SUMMARY:Intertidal Walk with Biologist Sandra Milligan
DESCRIPTION:Join biologist Sandra Milligan for an exploration of the Intertidal Zone. Low tide at Willow Point Reef typically uncovers over 80 species including dozens of algae\, squishy Anemones and Sea Cucumbers\, and beautifully decorated Lined Chitons\, Shield Limpets and Top Snails. Departing from Jaycee Park\, the most durable high-tide critters are seen first\, like Little Brown Barnacles and Periwinkles\, then mid-tide Mussels and iridescent Rainbow Leaf. As one moves through the “portal” to the low intertidal zone\, other treasures are revealed like Red Rock Crabs\, Green Urchins\, and Gumboot Chitons. Colours abound: Purple Sea Stars\, Red Urchins\, Yellow Ascidians\, and perhaps an Opalescent Nudibranch. Turning a rock uncovers tiny ecosystems of Tube Worms\, Gunnels\, and perhaps a Daisy Brittle Star that ranks as the most gasp-inducing sight on the reef. Organisms present vary with the seasons and across the years\, so every trip is different. \nWhat to Wear\nPlease dress for the weather and wear waterproof footwear\, ideally with good traction as we must walk through a wet area to access the reef. Walking poles are highly recommended as the footing can be very slippery. \nParking at Jaycee Park is very limited\, so please allow an extra 10 minutes to park on Larwood Road or Erickson Road and walk to Jaycee Park. Please leave the Larwood plaza parking for their customers.\nJoin biologist Sandra Milligan for an exploration of the Intertidal Zone.
\nWhat to wear: \nPlease dress for the weather and wear waterproof footwear\, ideally with good traction as we must walk through a wet area to access the reef. Walking poles are highly recommended as the footing can be very slippery. \nParking: \nParking at Jaycee Park is very limited\, so please allow an extra 10 minutes to park on Larwood Road or Erickson Road and walk to Jaycee Park. Please leave the Larwood plaza parking for their customers. \nDate: Tuesday July 14 from 11:30am – 1:00pm\nMeet at: Jaycee Park on Highway 19A (2500 S Island Hwy\, Campbell River\, BC V9W 1C6).\nFootwear: Waterproof footwear with good traction. Walking poles recommended.
