SUMMARY:Blue Taffeta Party Dress & Other Stories
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand! \n“These are my stories — as I remember them.”\nSet in a small northern town in the 1970s\, this is more than a coming out story. It’s a raw\, honest\, and often wry journey through the psyche\, the politics\, and the pressures of a time that had little room for difference.\nAs a gay kid growing up in an era of silence and shame\, my voice was misrepresented\, undermined\, even sensationalized by the dominant culture. Now\, I’m setting the story straight — through moments of resilience\, humour\, heartbreak\, and hope.\nThis is a story about choosing authenticity over fear\, joy over judgment\, and community over isolation.\nIt’s not just about coming out. It’s about coming into a life fully lived. \nDennis Hawkins-Bogle

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Campbell River Art Gallery July 4th from 1PM – 3PM for an afternoon full of personal interests\, admiration and identity exploration! \nDuring this workshop we will look at all we hold sacred whether it be pop-culture\, environments\, or personal experiences to create a collage and drawing based portrait on paper. Through her art\, she explores themes of idolization\, gender stereotypes\, and personal identity. \nShe includes the use of pop-culture and everyday imagery in her work to hopefully create connection among viewers through shared interest and experiences.

SUMMARY:Summer Ramble Songwriter Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Two days of songwriting\, co-writing\, and craft with J. Plank and guest Lindi Ortega — small group\, all levels welcome. \nDay One starts with the fundamentals: what makes a song a song\, where ideas come from\, and how to get something started. You’ll write\, share\, and spend the afternoon in a deeper session with J. Plank and Lindi Ortega — foundations track or craft and story track\, depending on where you’re at. \nDay Two brings the songs to life. Many if not all participants will get to work through their song with a live band (we’ll do our best to get to everyone!) — The One Spot Ramblers — and if something special happens\, there may be an invitation to perform at the Friday night Ramble Fest show. \nBring your notebook\, your instrument if you have one\, and your ears. Just show up with an open mind\, ready to create!

SUMMARY:Summer Ramble Festival
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Highway 19 Concerts and hosted by J. Plank\, the summer festival edition of Ramble at the Merville Hall features two summer nights of music collaboration and community. Inspired by the late\, great Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Ramble in Woodstock\, NY\, each Ramble shines a spotlight on the songs of emerging and established regional talents and guest headliners\, all backed by J. Plank and his stellar Vancouver Island house band. \nFriday:\nLindi Ortega – guitar\, vocals & songs\nG. Lee Worden – guitars\, keys\, vocals & songs\nJ. Plank – musical director\, host\, guitars & vocals\nChris Mason – bass\, vocals\nDallas Carrie – drums\, vocals\nPlus guests from the first Ramble songwriting workshop \nSaturday:\nBrandon Isaak – guitars\, vocals & songs\nChristy Vanden – guitars\, vocals & songs\nJ. Plank – musical director\, host\, guitars & vocals\nG. Lee Worden – guitars\, keys\, vocals\nChris Mason – bass\, vocals\nDallas Carrie – drums\, vocals \nPlank (Jeff Plankenhorn) is a highly respected blues and roots musician known for his skill as a slide guitarist\, songwriter\, and vocalist\, both as a solo artist and as a sought-after session musician. After years in the Austin music scene\, Plank calls Campbell River home while he continues to tour across the continent and beyond. Lee Worden\, Chris Mason\, and Dallas Carrie round out the house band of Island aces. \nRoots-noir artist Lindi Ortega\, a two-time Canadian Country Music Award-winning singer-songwriter\, has long captivated audiences with her signature vibrato\, magnetic stage presence\, and hauntingly soulful voice. Renowned for her ability to blend the ethereal with the evocative\, Ortega’s artistry transcends genre labels\, weaving stories that linger long after the last note fades. Her 2024 album From the Ether marked a poignant return to music following a prolonged hiatus brought on by vocal struggles\, the profound loss of her father\, and the dissolution of her nearly five-year marriage. These deeply personal challenges became the crucible for her artistic resurgence\, reigniting her passion for songwriting and performance. The album pushes the boundaries of traditional roots music\, embracing a haunting\, atmospheric quality that is distinctly Ortega’s own. Esoteric yet deeply relatable\, enigmatic yet undeniably raw\, Ortega is a master storyteller who defies convention. Whether gracing the hallowed stage of the Grand Ole Opry or commanding stadiums alongside Chris Stapleton\, hers is a voice that you don’t want to miss. \nBrandon Isaak takes a dash of Taj Mahal\, a sprinkle of B.B. King and a few drops of Lighting Hopkins\, stirs it up\, and simmers on low. This Yukon-born\, Island-based songster performs a mixture of thoughtful\, humorous\, spiritual and catchy memorable songs; delivered with world class guitar\, harmonica and vocals. Isaak has honed his craft over the past 37 years and it shows every night. Formerly guitarist and singer for the much loved Vancouver band the Twisters\, and under the name Yukon Slim\, Isaak has come into his own as a self-titled solo artist praised for his lo-fi sound and commitment to the blues tradition. He has played in three continents and 8 country and picked up two Juno nominations\, a half dozen Western Canadian Music Award and Maple Blues Award nominations nominations each. His latest album Walkin With The Blues was recently won Canadian Blues Music Award for song of the year\, electric album of the year\, and guitarist of the year. \nChristy Vanden is a wickedly talented multi-instrumentalist in the Comox Valley and popular guitar teacher at Long & McQuade Music. Whether playing lead guitar with Brodie Dawson and She Could Be Trouble or Karen Lee Batten\, playing drums for Oktiv6 and Funkyard or the Cloud District\, as a member of party juggernaut Time Well Wasted\, or playing her own solo material at small stages around the region\, her understated skill and musicality always shines. \nLee Worden is a multi-instrumentalist and singer with over 4 decades of professional touring and studio experience. He is equally at home on guitar\, bass\, keyboards or drums. He has performed with Al Harlow\, Mike Reno\, Corb Lund\, Ryan McMahon\, Tom Russell\, Fernando Verela\, Kim Wilson and Bobby Rush\, was a member of Sweeney Todd with Nick Gilder and from 2008-2019 served as lead guitarist for the legendary Ian Tyson. \nThe Ramble is a family friendly\, licensed event.

SUMMARY:Intertidal Walk with Biologist Sandra Milligan
DESCRIPTION:Join biologist Sandra Milligan for an exploration of the Intertidal Zone. Low tide at Willow Point Reef typically uncovers over 80 species including dozens of algae\, squishy Anemones and Sea Cucumbers\, and beautifully decorated Lined Chitons\, Shield Limpets and Top Snails. Departing from Jaycee Park\, the most durable high-tide critters are seen first\, like Little Brown Barnacles and Periwinkles\, then mid-tide Mussels and iridescent Rainbow Leaf. As one moves through the “portal” to the low intertidal zone\, other treasures are revealed like Red Rock Crabs\, Green Urchins\, and Gumboot Chitons. Colours abound: Purple Sea Stars\, Red Urchins\, Yellow Ascidians\, and perhaps an Opalescent Nudibranch. Turning a rock uncovers tiny ecosystems of Tube Worms\, Gunnels\, and perhaps a Daisy Brittle Star that ranks as the most gasp-inducing sight on the reef. Organisms present vary with the seasons and across the years\, so every trip is different. \nWhat to wear: \nPlease dress for the weather and wear waterproof footwear\, ideally with good traction as we must walk through a wet area to access the reef. Walking poles are highly recommended as the footing can be very slippery. \nParking: \nParking at Jaycee Park is very limited\, so please allow an extra 10 minutes to park on Larwood Road or Erickson Road and walk to Jaycee Park. Please leave the Larwood plaza parking for their customers. \nDate: Tuesday July 14 from 11:30am – 1:00pm\nMeet at: Jaycee Park on Highway 19A (2500 S Island Hwy\, Campbell River\, BC V9W 1C6).\nFootwear: Waterproof footwear with good traction. Walking poles recommended.

SUMMARY:An Evening of Mi'kmaq and Celtic Music with Morgan Toney Trio at Heriot Bay Inn
DESCRIPTION:2026 JUNO Award winner\, Mi’kmaq fiddler and singer Morgan Toney\, brings together the fiery fiddling of Cape Breton Island and the old songs of the Mi’kmaq People with brilliance and heart. See Morgan and his trio live in Herons Dining Room on Thursday\, July 16! \nTickets: $49 (show only)\nDinner Reservations Start at: 5:00 PM in Herons\nShow-Only Seating: 7:00 PM\nPerformance Time: 7:30–9:30 PM \nMake a night of it—enjoy dinner before settling in for an unforgettable evening of live music. Call 250-285-3322 to reserve your seats. \nThe Mi’kmaw were likely the first people that European explorer John Cabot met in 1497 on the East Coast of what would come to be Atlantic Canada. That legacy of welcome\, of bridging two worlds\, lives on in the songs and fiddling of Cape Breton’s breakout roots artist Morgan Toney. With thousands of years of tradition behind him\, Toney melds the Scottish heritage of this Nova Scotian island with Mi’kmaq songs\, stories\, and language in his own genre of music\, “Mi’kmaltic\,” meaning Mi’kmaq + Celtic. His new album\, Heal the Divide (released on March 7th\, 2025 with Indigenous label Ishkōdé Records)\, recognizes the diWicult history the L’nuk (Mi’kmaq People) and all First Nations peoples have had in Canada\, but it also celebrates the L’nu legacy in Canadian culture. It’s part of Toney’s larger vision to bring people together\, to set our differences aside\, and walk toward a place that Toney calls the “Promised Land”. \nMorgan Toney proudly welcomes the rest of Canada and the world to L’nu traditions as they contain many universal teachings. \nHe is joined by fellow Musician(s) Keith Mullins on Guitar\, Vocals\, and Percussion and Ryan Roberts on Mandolin and Vocals. Together\, they have created a fusion of Culture\, a Bridge between two Worlds\, and a path ahead for Truth and Reconciliation.
